Lending Earth a Helping Hand

It's now been over two years since the car accident that changed how my brain works. I never wanted to give up blogging, even though I thought about it so many times. I'm still getting used to my "new normal" thanks to my injured brain. Also, the blogging world has changed so much in the time that I've been away. I've decided I still have a lot to say and even though it's going to be harder this time around, I'm ready, with a few caveats. Instead of writing a lengthy post about everything that's happened since my last real blog post I just want to jump back into it and hope you decide you want to be part of my journey from here on out because things are going to be a little different.

 With that said, I'm guilty.

I'm probably guilty of a few things but what I'm most guilty of is consumerism. I have an online shopping problem and that's not only bad for my wallet, it's also bad for our beautiful planet. I create a lot of waste, and I know I'm not the only one. And when you have so many of us creating waste it becomes a problem.

That's why I'm on the journey to living a low waste life. Notice that I didn't say zero waste Zero waste where I live is simply not an option but low waste is absolutely doable. I'm going to take you with me.

I want to protect our planet. It's easy to say, "Oh, I'm just one person, I can't simply make a difference". And let's be real here, one person can't. However, when many individuals decide to make small changes it can really add up. One person does not have to do things perfectly, but lots of people can do things imperfectly.

My family has been vegan for years now which is the single most important step anyone can do to reduce their carbon footprint but we recently started composting, which is also a huge deal. Did you know that when you throw away food waste and it gets buried in a landfill it generates methane? Composting is ridiculously easy and minimizes green house gas emissions. There are a ton of ways you can do this but we bought a large composter for under $100. We keep a bowl on the counter that we put all the food waste in throughout the day and then put it in the composter at the end of the day.

I also vow to stop shopping online as much. Again, it's hard in my small farm town. I simply can't buy all of the things I need locally but I do promise our planet that I'll do better. I also plan to shop more from Certified B Corporations. If you're unfamiliar, a B Corps is "a business that meets the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose." They are basically companies that are doing better for people and for the planet who seek to create change.

I want to lend Earth a helping hand instead of being part of the problem. The promises I've made are going to change Beautiful Basics for good and I hope that you stick around to see what comes next.
